Storytelling with AI: a guide for families

Stories have always been made with tools. Papyrus, printing presses, typewriters, word processors — every generation of writers has absorbed new technology into their creative practice. AI writing tools are the latest in that line, and like every previous tool, they are most powerful in the hands of someone who already knows what they want to say.

For families, this creates a genuinely interesting opportunity. AI can be a remarkable creative partner for children — not to write stories for them, but to help them write stories that would have otherwise been beyond their reach. Here is how to make that happen.

The golden rule: the child leads, the AI assists

This is the principle that makes AI storytelling valuable rather than hollow. If a child says "write me a story about a dragon," the AI will produce something serviceable and generic. The child has learned nothing and created nothing.

If the same child says "I want to write a story about a dragon who is afraid of heights, who lives in a cave under the sea, and who has a best friend who is a very small fish called Gerald — can you help me work out what happens when Gerald goes missing?" — now they are in a creative partnership. The child has invented the world, the characters and the problem. The AI is helping them develop their own ideas.

The rule is: the child should be making more decisions than the AI. If the AI is driving and the child is passive, flip the balance.

Four approaches that work well for different ages

The "what happens next?" game (ages 5–8). Start a story together out loud or on paper — just two or three sentences. Then ask the AI what might happen next, generating three or four options. The child chooses one, adds their own details, and you continue. The AI provides possibility; the child makes the choices. This is collaborative decision-making dressed up as storytelling.

The character interview (ages 8–12). Ask the child to invent a character — name, age, what they look like, what they want, what they are afraid of. Then let the AI "interview" the character, asking questions that the child answers as if they are the character. "What is the worst thing that ever happened to you? What do you do when you are angry? If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?" The answers build a character far richer than a simple description would — and the child has invented all of it.

The story doctor (ages 10+). The child writes a scene or a chapter, then asks the AI to help diagnose what is not quite working. "My story feels a bit slow here — what might be the problem?" or "My character does something in chapter three that doesn't feel right — can you help me figure out why?" This teaches editing and revision, which are genuinely difficult creative skills, in a low-stakes and supportive way.

The world-building partner (ages 12+). Older children who want to write more ambitious fiction can use AI to develop the world around their story — the history, the rules, the geography, the secondary characters. The AI is very good at generating consistent detail within parameters the child sets. "In my world, magic requires physical sacrifice — help me think through the consequences of that rule." The child has invented the core premise; the AI helps them explore its implications.

What AI storytelling teaches (beyond storytelling)

When a child uses AI as a creative partner in the ways described above, they are practising skills that extend well beyond writing:

Prompting and directing. Getting useful output from an AI requires learning to ask precise, specific questions. "Write me a story" gets a generic response. "Write a scene where Gerald the fish realises he is lost, in a paragraph from Gerald's point of view, written in a sad but not dramatic tone" gets something the child can actually use. The skill of communicating clearly what you want — and then evaluating whether you got it — is enormously valuable.

Critical editing. When the AI produces something that is almost right but not quite, the child has to identify specifically what is wrong and how to fix it. That is the core skill of editing, which most children never develop because they only write, never revise.

Understanding AI outputs. Working with an AI and seeing what it does well and badly — the generic phrases it reaches for, the way it loses track of character voices, the tendency to resolve plots too neatly — gives children a practical, grounded understanding of what AI actually is. That understanding is more useful than any definition.

A note on ownership

Children sometimes ask: "Is this really my story if the AI helped write it?" This is actually a wonderful philosophical question about authorship, and it is worth exploring rather than dismissing.

The useful answer is that authorship has always been collaborative. Editors, writing groups, beta readers, and the books an author has read all shape a story. What matters is the source of the vision — the decisions about what the story is about, who the characters are, and what it means. If those decisions come from your child, the story is theirs. The AI is a tool, like a word processor or a thesaurus, that helped them make it.

That is worth saying clearly to children who are proud of what they have made — because they should be.
